Aug 3, 2013

Hey guys, My life just got flipped upside down and turned around. My principal called me this morning two weeks before I go back to school and asked me to teach Science instead of English Language Arts. I have already been planning my lessons for the first two weeks of school and wrote out my year long plans, and setting up my classroom. I now have to get in the mindset of science, and I'll be switching rooms....AAHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

But my motto is "God will never put you through anything you can not handle". So I will take this as a learning opportunity and make science fun!!! Any science teachers out there with some advice for me?!?!

Back to School Goals Linky

Hi all, I'm linking up today with I Heart Recess for her Monthly Goals; Back to School Edition (Linky). I can't believe my first year teaching is starting so soon. Here are my goals below.

Personal: I really have been trying to work on being fit, but have not been consistent lately, so I really want to push myself to go to they gym at least 3 times a week; I have a gym at my apartment complex, so I have no excuse

Organization: This is my first year teaching so I believe that if I start off organized and really push myself I can maintain that goal forever. I really want to make sure everything is in it's proper place.

Planning: I have been told by numerous teachers to always be two weeks ahead with my lesson plans so I definitely will push myself to stick to this goal. I've already written out my long term goals and work on week one for school, so I think I'm doing good so far.

Professional: I couldn't attend a lot of professional development workshops because my information will not be in the school system until the first day that teachers go back, so I have no way of signing up :(. However my mentor teacher did give me a lot of books to read so I will definitely be using those in my teaching plans.

Students: I want to make sure that I get to know my students likes/dislikes, home-life, everything. I want them to feel comfortable in my classroom and I want to push them to be the best that they can be no matter what the circumstance.

Motto: I am a firm believer that God will never put a person through anything he/she can not handle. So I know that when times are tough it is because God is trying to push me to be better.

If you want to link up feel free. What are your goals for this upcoming school year?

First Product on TPT

Hi guys, Sorry I know I'm posting twice in one day, but I'm so excited to share my first product on TPT. It is a quick reference list of the 6th Grade English Language Arts/Reading Common Core Standards. You can download it for free here! Here's a snapshot of what it looks like.

Liebster Award!!!!

I can't believe I've been nominated for a Liebster Award, thank you very much Dava Smith English Teacher.

In order to accept this award, I have to do the following things:

1. Link back to the blog(s) that nominated me

2. Nominate 5-11 blogs with fewer than 200 followers

3. Answer the questions posted by nominator

4. Create 11 questions for my nominees

5. Share 11 random facts about yourself

6. Contact my nominees and let them know I nominated them

Dava asked me:

1. What is your favorite professional development book for teaching reading, writing, or grammar? If these aren't your areas of expertise, pick any PD book that you love. I would have to say, "When Kids Can't Read: What Teachers Can Do: A Guide for Teachers 6-12" by Kylene Beers. This is my first year teaching and I will be in a low-income Title I area, and I feel like this book has really prepared me for getting my students to understand, love, and appreciate reading.

2. What thought inspires you to continue through the tough days? I am a firm believer that God will not put you through anything you can not handle, so I try to live by this everyday.

3. What is your hobby (i.e. what do you do when you aren't teaching, planning, grading, etc.)? I started knitting last year, so I love to just practice knitting new things, sorry I don't have any pics right now. I also like to try new recipes in the kitchen, cooking soothes me.

4. What is your favorite book to teach and why? If you don't teach books, pick your favorite topic. This is my first year teaching so I don't know yet, but I think I may teach Holes this year, just because I loved it as a kid, and I think it teaches really good morals, about caring for one another, and how sometimes things just happen for no reason and we have to push ourselves to pull through tough times.

5. Explain aspects your classroom organization system that help your classroom run smoothly. Again, first year teacher, but I thin that from the beginning I will be enforcing rules and procedures and make sure that I am very consistent.

6. What is something new that you are going to try next year in your classroom? I'm really looking forward to using interactive notebooks in my class this year.

7. What is your favorite store and why? I love Target, because I can get any and everything I need there.

8. What type of technology do you use most in your classroom? I will definitely be using my computer for PowerPoint presentations a lot this upcoming school year.

9. What's your favorite teaching moment? Haven't had it yet, but I will definitely let you guys know.

10. What advice would you give to new teachers? Be patient with yourself, and your classroom, and don't give up.

11. What is your teaching style? I definitely want to have a hands-on learning/teaching experience with my class and try to relate everything they learn to their personal lives and the world around us.

11. Random Facts:

1. I love mystery books, really mystery everything.

2. I started a "natural" journey with my hair two years ago, and cut out all the perm in order to rock my natural hair texture, and It has been one of the most rewarding experiences ever.

3. I have a Morkie (Maltese + Yorkie) who is 6 months old named Marley after Bob Marley!

4. I have four younger sisters.

5. I took a year off after graduating to work with the National Park Service.

6. I was born in Germany. (My parents were in the Army)

7. I was a bartender for almost three years. ( I make a mean Long Island)

8. I am teaching in the same county where I went to public school!

9. I love macaroni and cheese.

10. I love food.

11. I dream about teaching, I am excited and nervous for my first year!

Okay so I would like to nominate (this was very hard because so many people have already been nominated):

Meatballs in the Middle

Middle School: Teacher/Director

Caught in the Middle

The Creative Classroom

Funds of Knowledge

Surviving Sixth Grade

Questions for my Nominees:

1. Why did you decide to be a teacher?

2. What is your favorite book to teach in the classroom and why?

3. What advice would you give to new teachers?

4. What color scheme/theme are you using in your classroom?

5. What school(s) did you attend for college?

6. How long have you been teaching?

7. If you weren't a teacher what would you be and why?

8. What do you do outside of teaching for fun?

Student Loans

Just as I am getting ready for the school year and trying to budget for classroom supplies, another one of my loans went into repayment today. I'm trying my hardest not to let this discourage me, because I barely have enough money as it is from my internship, and I don't get my first official paycheck until after school starts. Is there any advice out there for me guys?

Let's Get Acquainted Linky Party: My Favorite Teacher

Hey Guys, So today, I'm Linking up with Mrs. Reed to join in on her Let's Get Acquainted Linky Party, and talk about my favorite teacher. Now there are numerous reasons why I decided to become a teacher, but Mrs. Jennings my sixth grade teacher back in 2001 had to be one of the main reasons I wanted to join this profession. She was like a second mom to me. When I missed the deadline to turn in my permission slips and go on field trips she always called my mom because she never wanted to leave me behind. She always pushed me to be the best and I love her for that. We still keep in touch to this day, and I wish I can give to my future students what she gave to me. Love you Mrs. Jennings!!!!! Who was your favorite teacher?

National Park Service

How many of you guys know about the National Park Service? The reason I ask is because I'm finishing up a year long internship, here in Washington D.C. working for the NPS Interpretation and Education Division. I started this internship last summer after I graduated from college as a summer job prior my teaching career. I did so well that they asked me to stay longer, and here I am. Before coming here I knew nothing about the National Park Service, and what this government agency has to offer educators. Over the past year, I've worked along with the Department of Education, to figure out ways the National Park Service, can share it's resources with teachers and educators. The National Park Service offers tons of professional development programs for educators year round, and I will do my best to share this information with you as I hear about it. I am sad to be leaving my internship in a few weeks, but I know that I was meant to be in the classroom. If you have any questions about the National Park Service please feel free to leave a comment below.... There are tons of opportunities, from field trips, to lesson plans and curriculum, and digital learning for your classroom. Find your local park here.

Books, Books, and more Books...

So, Saturday was an amazing day, so amazing that I forgot to post! I've constantly been on the lookout for cheap books to add to my classroom library. I found the holy grail of cheap books at the Wheaton Public Library, in Wheaton, MD. If you are a teacher in the D.M.V. area please stop by this library, they have a bookstore downstairs where prices range from $.50 to $3.00. I added about 25 books to my library Saturday for $12. I will definitely be going back soon. Have a great day everyone.
